8 ways to lower moving day stress
From two weeks ahead to box counts, picking movers and insurance — how to plan moving day to the minute and avoid a 5,000 AZN damage bill.
Why moving is so stressful
Psychology research ranks moving as the third most stressful life event after divorce and losing a loved one. The cause isn't time — it's lack of a plan. The right plan kills 90% of the chaos. Below: a 14-day plan from a pro who's run 50+ Baku moves, a box system, and rules for picking movers.
14 days out: planning begins
Week one
- Check the new place — keys ready on the day?
- Note elevator, hallway width, floor (these price the move)
- Confirm internet, gas, electric meter readings in writing
- List furniture that needs disassembly
Week two
- In each room create 3 piles: keep, sell/donate, toss
- Old books and clothes → donation center
- List unneeded items on Tap.az — usually returns 200–500 AZN and lightens the load
7 days out: the box system
Box count
- 100 m² home ≈ 30 boxes
- 200 m² ≈ 55 boxes
- Books in small boxes (max 20 kg), bedding in big
Box labels
Every box gets 3 lines:
- Room (kitchen, bedroom, kid's)
- Contents (short: dinner plates, winter clothes)
- Priority (1 = need day one, 2 = within a week, 3 = within a month)
Color coding helps — different tape per room.
Supplies
- 30 boxes
- 3 rolls of stretch wrap
- 5 rolls of packing tape
- 100 zip bags (screws, cables)
- 10 kg of old newspaper for fragiles
3 days out: pack by priority
Low priority (pack first)
- Seasonal clothes
- Decor, frames
- Books, toys
- Spare dishes
High priority (last minute)
- Daily clothes
- Phone chargers
- Medication
- One week of dishes
Moving day: 8 morning rules
1. Pack a "day-one box" (stays with you)
Kettle, tea, sugar, 2 mugs, toilet paper, soap, towel, phone charger, meds, keys, sleepwear. This box doesn't go with the movers.
2. Documents in a bag
Passport, deeds, bank cards, insurance — never in a box. Replacing them takes 2 months.
3. Kid & pet plan
In the old place — an empty room for kids and pets. In the new place — one room ready in advance.
4. Clean the new place first
Before boxes arrive: wipe floors, open the fridge, disinfect the bath. After boxes are in, you can't.
5. Bedroom first
Key boxes go straight to the bedroom — the bed should be assembled by night. Cuts stress in half.
6. Kitchen second
Group related boxes (food, dishes, utensils).
7. Photograph everything
Before the move: condition shots of expensive items (TV, fridge, washer). You'll need them for insurance if anything breaks.
8. Final sweep of the old place
Each room:
- Gas, water, electricity off?
- Windows shut?
- Keys handed over?
- Neighbors notified?
Picking movers — 7 questions
- Written quote — no = walk away
- Insurance policy — show it
- Asks how many boxes — if not, what's the price based on?
- Asks about elevator and floor — if not, the estimate is wrong
- 2 references from people you know
- What vehicle is coming? — ask, or a 1995 truck shows up
- What if they're late? — must be in the contract
Baku moving price bands
| Size | Same city | Inter-city |
|---|---|---|
| Studio (40 m²) | 60–100 AZN | 150–250 AZN |
| 2-bed (80 m²) | 120–180 AZN | 250–400 AZN |
| 3-bed (120 m²) | 200–300 AZN | 400–650 AZN |
| + piano | +80–150 AZN | +150–300 AZN |
Typical damage cases
- Scratched fridge — compressor moved unprotected (300–800 AZN)
- Broken TV — no original box (500–1,500 AZN)
- Dismantled furniture damaged — bed headboard (200–500 AZN)
- Smashed dishes — bad packing (10–50 AZN/piece)
A vetted mover via the platform is worth 3× a street-hired one: there's insurance, paperwork, and someone to bill for damages. A 200 AZN price difference can save 2,000 AZN of potential damage.
