When to call an electrician? 7 dangerous signs
Flickering bulbs, sparking outlets — here are the signs that demand a professional, explained in detail. What can you safely fix yourself, and what must always go to a pro?
Why timing matters
Around 30% of home fires in Azerbaijan trace back to faulty wiring. Homeowners often delay: "the light flickers, I'll fix it later" — but behind that flicker can sit a melted cable or a burned-out contact. If you spot any of the 7 signs below, don't wait: cut the main breaker and call a licensed electrician.
7 dangerous signs
1. Sparks or smoke from an outlet
The contact is burning or there's a short. Cut the main breaker immediately, don't touch the outlet. Smell of burning plastic? Ventilate the room and warn neighbors.
2. Burning plastic smell
Cable insulation starts melting above 80°C. The smell usually comes from a junction box inside the wall; if untouched for 24 hours, fire risk rises 5×.
3. Bulbs blow often
If one bulb dies more than twice a month, the bulb isn't the problem:
- Wrong wattage (100W bulb in a 60W fitting)
- Voltage spikes in your area
- Loose contact — the socket has bent and overheats
4. Breaker trips repeatedly
More than twice a week is a warning. Causes: overloaded circuit, a device with damaged insulation, or the breaker itself is worn. Note which appliance you start when it trips.
5. Warm outlet or switch
If it feels warm to the touch, the cable gauge doesn't match the load. A 16A outlet needs 2.5 mm² wire; 1.5 mm² will melt the insulation.
6. Mild electric shocks
"Just a little, it'll pass" — no. It means grounding isn't working. Next time with wet hands the same shock can stop a heart.
7. Wires in wet areas
Cracked insulation in the bathroom, on a balcony, in a storeroom turns every metal surface live during a leak. That violates IP44.
DIY vs pro — decision matrix
| Job | Can you DIY? |
|---|---|
| Change a bulb | ✅ |
| Remove outlet cover (inspect) | ⚠ Only with breaker off |
| Run a new line | ❌ Licensed electrician |
| Replace a breaker | ❌ Licensed electrician |
| Test grounding | ❌ Needs a meter |
5 minutes of prep before the call
- Note when it started ("after plugging in a new microwave")
- Which outlet or room is affected?
- How many devices share that circuit?
- Make the meter accessible, point to the breaker box
- Snap a photo of the burned area if visible — speeds diagnosis
Average prices in Baku
- Diagnostic visit: 15–25 AZN
- Outlet replacement: 8–15 AZN/each + materials
- New line run: 20–35 AZN/m
- Full house panel swap: 350–600 AZN
4 red flags when picking an electrician
- No written quote — the price will swell later
- Won't show ID
- Shows up with no tools (no multimeter, no voltage tester)
- Says "done in half an hour" — diagnosis alone takes 20 minutes
In an emergency, cut the main breaker first. Then unplug the damaged appliance. Never touch the mains with wet hands. Get kids and pets out of the room.
